Turkey referendum: Opposition to demand recount of 60% of votes

Turkey's main opposition party has said it will call for a recount in up to 60% of votes as exit polls show the "yes" campaign to grant President Recep Tayyip Erdogan new powers is narrowly ahead.

State-run Anadolu news agency said votes in favour of allowing 18 constitutional changes stood at 51.3% with 98% of ballots counted.

The changes would replace Turkey's parliamentary system of government with a presidential one and could see Mr Erdogan remain in office until at least 2029.

Presidential sources claimed that Mr Erdogan has said the result of the referendum is clear.

Opinion polls had shown a narrow lead for a "yes" vote before Sunday's ballot, but the country's three largest cities - Istanbul, Ankara and Izmir - and the mainly Kurdish southeast looked set to vote "no".

The referendum has bitterly divided Turkey, and will affect the country's strained relations with the European Union.

President Erdogan has insisted the changes are needed to amend the current constitution, which was written by generals following a military coup in 1980, to confront security and political challenges in Turkey and avoid fragile coalition governments of the past.

But critics say the move grants sweeping powers to Mr Erdogan following a failed coup last July.

A statement on the High Electoral Board's website hours before polls closed said it would count ballots that had not been stamped by officials as valid unless they could be proved fraudulent.

That triggered strong criticism from the main opposition People's Republican Party, which said the decision caused a serious legitimacy problem in the referendum.

Erdal Aksunger, deputy chairman of the party, claimed "illegal acts" had been carried out in favour of the government in the referendum.

Devlet Bahceli, leader of the Nationalist Action Party, declared victory for the "yes" campaign, and said Turkish voters had chosen of their own free will.

He added the result was "a very important success; a win that makes neglect and denial impossible".

After casting his vote in a school near his home in Istanbul, Mr Erdogan said: "God willing I believe our people will decide to open the path to much more rapid development.

"I believe in my people's democratic common sense."

Around 55 million people were eligible to vote in the referendum.

Under the proposals, the office of prime minister would be abolished, allowing the president to draft the budget, declare a state of emergency and issue decrees overseeing ministries without parliamentary approval.

Abuja airport to be ready two days before deadline

The Managing Director of the Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), Saleh Dunoma, has said the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja, would be ready by April 17 – two days before the six-week deadline elapses.

Dunoma said this in a statement signed by the media consultant to the Minister of State for Aviation, Mr Ariyo Akinfenwa, on Sunday in Lagos.

“We will be ready April 17 but we are leaving the remaining two days for Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA)

“We have written to them and they will come by today (Sunday) to do the preliminary inspection.

“They have to certify the airport that what we have done is in accordance with their standards.

“If there is any observation as a result of the inspection, we will now make sure we carry out corrections,” the FAAN boss said.

Dunoma also stated that with the level of work done, the April 19 deadline will not be moved.

“All the critical items of work are 100 per cent except may be two items; which of course are the markings and the cleaning.

“Asphalt work is 100 per cent, markings have reached almost 70 per cent and the airfield lighting system has reached 80 per cent, ” Dunoma added.

He added: ”We are now levelling all the airfield lightings’ locations, all the installations and flash with the ground surface.

“In case of any skidding, there will not be concrete projection above the ground surface.”

He also said the new runway does not need calibration, because the previous Navigational Aids were not tampered with.

“The runway does not need calibration. All we need to check is to make sure there is 100 per cent illumination.

“Calibration is done periodically. When the time come for calibration, the appropriate authority will calibrate the Instrument Landing System (ILS),” Dunoma said.

US: North Korea's 'provocative' actions 'can't continue'

The medium-range missile "blew up almost immediately" following the launch attempt from a base in the Sinpo area early on Sunday, according to US military.

Former Conservative foreign secretary Sir Malcom Rifkind said it was possible the weapon either malfunctioned or was sabotaged by a US cyberattack.

The incident came a day after a huge military parade in the capital Pyongyang, which was feared to have featured a new type of intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM).

US officials said they were certain the weapon in the failed launch was not an ICBM, which has a minimum range of 3,400 miles and is designed to carry nuclear warheads.International concern has been increasing over the deteriorating situation, with China expressing fears war could break out "at any moment".

Speaking about North Korea, US national security adviser Lieutenant General HR McMaster said the rogue state's actions "just can't continue"US President Donald Trump tweeted: "Our military is building and is rapidly becoming stronger than ever before. Frankly, we have no choice!"

Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson tweeted: "I strongly condemn the latest North Korean missile launch. They must stop these belligerent acts and comply with UN resolutions."

:: Key steps in North Korea's nuclear ambitions

The North, under leader Kim Jong-Un, launched a ballistic missile from the same region earlier this month ahead of a summit between the the US and China. On that occasion the ballistic missile flew for about 37 miles (60km) before landing in the Sea of Japan.

Mr Trump has put Pyongyang "on notice" over fears the country is developing a weapon that could threaten the US.

On Saturday morning, North Korea warned America to end its "military hysteria" or face retaliation.

The reclusive state said it was prepared to respond to any attacks with "nuclear attacks of our own style".

Why President Buhari is Wildly Popular in the Muslim North By Farooq A. Kperogi, Ph.D. Twitter: @farooqkperogi

Someone suggested a few weeks ago on Facebook that President Buhari’s irrationally wild popularity in the Muslim north would require an entire doctoral dissertation to explain. I disagree. It doesn’t require that much effort to explain. It’s simply the product of a mix of amnesic nostalgia, visceral emotions, and Muslim clerical tyranny in the north. Here is what I mean.

Nigerians generally have a predilection for sentimentalizing the supposed glories of bygone days. The past is always greener than the present, and the further a memory recedes into the past the more its putative glories are celebrated and romanticized. Add that to the fact that Buhari’s first coming was short-lived.

But you can actually map the genealogy of the myth of Buhari’s “Mai gaskiyaness,” which is the immediate trigger for the worshipful admiration he enjoys among the masses (and some elites) of the Muslim north. It started in the year 2001 after former President Obasanjo summoned a Council of State meeting in the aftermath of the Sharia-inspired sanguinary fury that drenched Kaduna in oceans of blood.

The Obasanjo government, speaking through then Vice President Atiku Abubkar, said the Council of State, of which all past presidents and heads of state are members, had agreed that all Sharia states should revert to the “status quo ante,” basically meaning they should discontinue the implementation of Sharia.

Buhari disputed the accuracy of the Obasanjo government’s rendition of what the Council of State recommended. He said Sharia didn’t even come up in the discussions of the Council of State. For being the only person to openly disagree with the Obasanjo government, he began to be called “Mai Gaskiya.”

Thereafter, he became an open advocate for Sharia and even went so far as to say the northern Muslim electorate shouldn’t vote anyone into office who wasn’t committed to Sharia. "I will continue to show openly and inside me the total commitment to the Sharia movement that is sweeping all over Nigeria," Buhari said at a seminar organized by the Supreme Council for Sharia in Nigeria in August 2001. "God willing, we will not stop the agitation for the total implementation of the Sharia in the country."

Although Buhari himself isn’t a deeply religious person, his open, full-throated but politically motivated (some would say opportunistic) support for Sharia (at a time no other former president of northern Nigerian Muslim extraction was willing to do so) caused him to be wildly popular among northern Muslim masses and the conservative clerical elite of the region.

Now, Islamic clerics in the north preach that Buhari is divinely ordained to be president and that criticism of his policies amounts to blasphemy. That’s why northern Muslim critics of Buhari like me are seen as heretics—or, worse, not even Muslim at all. I recall a northern Nigerian university teacher and foreign-based PhD student exclaiming “SubhaanAllaah!” when I first shared my criticism of Buhari with him during a WhatsApp chat. He was so distraught you would think I committed blasphemy. So it isn’t just northern Nigerian Muslim masses that literally worship Buhari.

Given the oversized influence of Islamic clerics in shaping public opinion in Muslim northern Nigeria, no amount of logic, evidence-based reasoning, economic hardship, etc. will make the littlest dent on Buhari’s popularity in the Muslim north.

In his widely shared articled titled, “Advice On Buhari Media Centre,” Dr. Aliyu Tilde beautifully captured the complicity of the conservative northern Nigerian Muslim clerical establishment in the deification of President Buhari.

“The same thing applies to religious leaders who are invited to the villa (by the President, said one of them) for the same purpose of propaganda,” Dr. Tilde wrote. “They return and tell their followers all sorts of stories that they have met an angel there and witnessed miracles at the foot of Sinai. I just heard a Whatsapp audio of one of them from Sokoto who was telling his followers, amidst Allahu Akbar, this kind of stories: Buhari ya yi kira. Kuna ga sai a zauna?…kun san da Nijeriya ba ta da uba. Yanzu na tai uba. Na je villa, na ga abin ban mamaki… What a shame."

It’s interesting that Buhari was particularly unpopular with the northern Nigerian Muslim clerical establishment in the 1980s. He was resented for a number of reasons. His wife then, as now, made sartorial choices that didn’t conform to the clerics’ expectations of a Muslim woman. Buhari also banned open-air preaching, stopped/drastically reduced state sponsorship of Hajj, and forbade the building of new Jumu’ah mosques without the permission of emirate councils.

This put him at odds with Muslim clerics, particularly the emergent Izala sect, which now enjoys hegemony in northern Nigeria. Sheikh Abubakar Mahmood Gumi, in fact, said during a preaching session that “Allah will not forgive the regimes of Shagari and that of Buhari because they blocked the way of Allah.”

Fast-forward to the 2000s and Buhari’s support for Sharia when it wasn’t politically wise to do so, especially by a former head of state, set the stage for his deification and worship by a clerical elite that a generation ago invoked curses on him. In a way, Buhari is reaping the “benefits” of the choices he made in 2001.

Now millions of people in the Muslim north would rather die than withhold support for Buhari, however much his government’s policies, or lack thereof, smolder them. Support for Buhari in the Muslim north isn’t just politics; it’s now religion. There is no precedent for this in Nigeria’s history.

Emir Sanusi II as President?
I picked up on the cryptic but devastating critique of Kano State Governor Ganduje’s government in Emir Sanusi’s wildly trending Kaduna speech and wonder if the emir is still interested in his job.

Remember that the power to appoint and dethrone traditional rulers rests exclusively with state governors. Now, pissing off the federal government AND the state government AND an entire region’s conservative cultural elites with bitter, uncomfortable truth-telling is a lethally combustible mix.

I make no pretenses to possessing oracular powers (because I don't), but I predict that, like his grandfather, Emir Sanusi II will be deposed. But, unlike his grandfather, he may end up becoming Nigeria’s president after his dethronement. Kano’s loss would then be Nigeria’s gain (or loss, depending on how he would turn out), which, in a strangely circuitous way, would also be Kano’s gain (or loss) since Kano is part of Nigeria.

Sanusi shouldn’t be Kano’s emir; he should be Nigeria’s president. I have strong disagreements with the neoliberal orthodoxy he subscribes to and his feudal and elitist detachment from the plight of the poor, but it would be nice to have a truly informed and educated man as president for once.

For the first time since his marriage with Tiwa Savage broke down, Teebillz spoke publicly about the marriage and what he would have done differently.

Yesterday, Teebillz was invited by his mentor and life coach, Lanre Olusola to speak as a panelist at Mind the Gap X, a love and relationship class for single, married and divorced people. At the event, Teebillz was quoted saying,

‘If I have the chance of doing my marriage over again, l will put God first and not have an elaborate wedding, It’s the 21st century and as men, most of us want to live like we are the lords of the marriage. You’re a partner. It’s about our weaknesses, we’re here to help each other.’

Looters now burying stolen funds in backyards, deep forests, cemeteries - Lai Mohammed

The Federal Government has hailed its whistle-blower policy, which has led to the recovery of looted funds in many currencies that may otherwise not have been discovered, describing it as an effective tool of fighting corruption in Nigeria.

In a statement issued in Lagos on Sunday, the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, said the policy has also shown the depth of support among Nigerians for the fight against corruption.

He therefore thanked Nigerians for the enthusiasm and commitment that they have shown in helping the government to tackle the hydra-headed monster of corruption through the useful leads they have been providing to appropriate government agencies.

''Since we launched the whistle-blower policy, we have received immeasurable support from Nigerians. Yes, there is monetary reward for any information that leads to recovery of looted funds, but from what we have seen, most of the Nigerians who have come forward with useful leads were driven by patriotism rather than reward.

''Nigerians, fired by a fervid resolve to help banish corruption from their country, have daily inundated the offices of the appropriate government agencies with valuable information. We have been told how looters have resorted to burying stolen funds in their backyards, in deep forests and even in burial grounds.

''Thanks to whistle-blowers, it is now clear that a rapacious few have pillaged the nation's wealth through a vicious orgy of corrupt practices. Thanks to the useful information provided by Nigerians, it is now obvious that more funds are in the possession of looters than are available to government at all levels to meets its obligations, including paying workers' salaries, providing social amenities, upgrading infrastructure and ensuring the security of lives and property.

''As the looters continue to run helter-skelter, many of them are even abandoning their booty at unusual places, including airports. We want to assure Nigerians that we will not abandon this policy for whatever reason. Instead, we will continue to rejig it to make it more effective as a tool for fighting corruption,'' the Minister said.

He said the recovered looted funds are safe, adding that as soon as the necessary reconciliation process and the litigation in some of the cases are concluded, the government will give a full account of the funds to Nigerians.

Alhaji Mohammed re-assured Nigerians who have useful information on looted funds that the government will protect their identities and also ensure that they get the stipulated reward for their effort

Oba of Benin has told pst Ize- Iyamu to accept tribunal ruling

The Oba of Benin, His Royal Majesty, Oba Ewuare II, on Saturday called on the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party in the last Edo State governorship election, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu, to accept the ruling of the state Governorship Election Petitions Tribunal.

Oba Ewuare II made the call in a statement signed by the Chief Press Secretary to the Benin Monarchy, Mr. Desmond Agbama.

The tribunal had on Friday dismissed the petition filed by the PDP and Ize-Iyamu against the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Godwin Obaseki, for lack of merit.

The Chairman of the three-man panel, Justice Ahmed Badamasi, who delivered the judgment, also affirmed the election of Obaseki.

The PDP and its candidate had rejected the ruling and vowed to pursue the case up to the Supreme Court.

But the Benin monarch advised Ize-Iyamu to accept the decision of the tribunal as “there was no victor and no vanquished.”

He said, “In an election, there is no victor and no vanquished. Ize-Iyamu should accept the decision of the tribunal in good faith and forge ahead in the task of providing democratic dividends for the people.”

Oba Ewuare II, however, congratulated Obaseki, whose victory he said came at a time when his services were needed the most.

He also urged the APC to support the governor in the provision of basic infrastructure and jobs for the unemployed in the state.

However, Ize-Iyamu could not be reached for his comments on the matter. He had also yet to respond to a text message sent to his mobile as of the time of filling this report.

Caitlyn Jenner drops bombshell in new book, claims Robert Kardashian confessed to him that he knew O. J. Simpson was guilty of killing his wife

The Kardashians will definitely not like this! Caitlyn Jenner has dropped a bombshell in her upcoming memoir, Secrets of My Life, claiming that Kris Jenner's ex husband, Robert Kardashian when he was alive, confessed to him that he knew O. J. Simpson was actually guilty of killing his estranged wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, her friend, and a restaurant waiter, yet chose to defend him in spite of that.
Bruce Jenner, now Caitlyn Jenner, married Kris, the ex-wife of Robert Kardashian, and years after that, the criminal trial began for O. J. Simpson. In the book obtained by RadarOnline, there are claims that Caitlyn disclosed that the late attorney made the confession to Bruce during a car ride in the late 90s.
"I would’ve been okay with it if they had gotten him in the first trial," Caitlyn claims Robert told her. The implication was obvious that he believed O.J. was guilty," she wrote in her book.
Caitlyn claims she knew O.J. Simpson very well before the murder, due to Kris’ close relationship with Nicole Simpson, and hated him.
"He was the most narcissistic, egocentric, neediest a**hole in the world of sports I had ever seen, and I had seen a lot of them," Caitlyn writes in the tell-all book.
"I believe he got away with two savage murders," Caitlyn later admits, adding that while Kris was on Team Nicole, her young daughters Kourtney and Kim took their father’s side on Team O.J.!
"See, I told you he didn’t do it!" Kourtney told Bruce after school on the day O. J. Simpson was found not guilty in a verdict that stunned the world. Caitlyn claims she explained to her young stepdaughters that O.J. may not have been innocent and forbade them from mentioning the accused murderer’s name in the house ever again.
Caitlyn also claimed in the book that she believes Robert may have been motivated to represent O.J. because he was jealous that Kris had moved on from their marriage to successful male athlete Bruce.
"I wonder if it was his way of saying to her what I think she was saying to him when she married me: a big f*** you," Caitlyn writes.
It had earlier been revealed that Caitlyn alleged in his book that Kris made her suppress her true self when she was still living as Bruce. That did not go down well with the Kardashian matriarch and it is doubtful if this new claim will be well received by the Kardashians.

EFCC shares more photos from the Ikoyi home where $38m, N23m, £27k, hidden in safes was discovered

The whistle blowing policy of the Federal Government is paying off positively as the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission today stormed a residential building in the 7th Floor of a four - bedroom apartment at Osborne Towers located at 16, Osborne road Ikoyi, Lagos, where a humongous find of foreign currencies and Naira notes to the tune of $43.4m, £27,800 and N23.2m was uncovered.

The operation followed a whistle blower's confidential alert received by the Commission's Lagos office this morning regarding some noticed suspicious movement of bags in and out of a particular apartment in the building. According to the source, the movers of the bags, make believe that they bring in bags of clothes.

Another source who is conversant with the apartment of interest indicated that some woman usually appeared on different occassion with Ghana Must Go bags. " She comes looking haggard, with dirty clothes but her skin didn't quite match her outward appearance, perhaps a disguise", the source said.

On getting to the building, operatives met the entrance door locked. Inquiries from the guards at the gate explained that nobody resides in the apartment, but some persons come in and out once in a while. In compliance with the magisterial order contained in the warrant, the EFCC used minimum force to gain entrance into the apartment.

Monies were found in two of the four bedroom apartment. Further probe of the wardrobe by operatives in one of the rooms, was found to be warehousing three fire proof cabinents disguisedly hidden behind wooden panels of the wardrobe. Upon assessing the content of the cabinets, neatly arranged US Dollars, Pound Sterling and some Naira notes in sealed wrappers.

Preliminary findings indicate that the funds are suspected to be proceeds of unlawful activity.
The facility is said to be owned by Osborne Towers Resident Association.
Investigations are ongoing.
