"My Life Is Endangered Over Exposing Cross River State Govt Diversion Of Relief Materials Meant For Bakassi" - Sen. Florence Ita- Giwa

Former senator, Florence Ita-Giwa, says her life is endangered following her recent ‘exposure’ of the diversion of relief materials meant for Internally Displaced Persons in Dayspring Island, Bakassi.

The senator disclosed this at a media briefing in Lagos on Monday. Addressing the press, Ms. Ita-Giwa alleged that a certain Effiong Udeme in collusion with some Cross River State officials shared the relief materials, which included bags of cement, wood, and packs of zinc among themselves and also sold some to the market.

But in a twist of events, Christian Ita, the Chief Press Secretary to the governor of Cross River State issued a statement on Tuesday accusing Ms. Ita-Giwa of attempting to divert attention from the counter-claims by some indigenes of Bakassi who accuse her of age-long diversion of materials and the resettlement fund meant for their rehabilitation.

Mr. Ita was quoted as saying, “Rather than respond to the claims by Bakassi indigenes that she has over the years been diverting their relief materials and funds, Senator Ita-Giwa has resorted to blackmailing the governor in a bid to divert attention from the accusations by the indigenes that she has been diverting their relief materials.”

But, Ms. Ita-Giwa has insisted that she is a victim of a personal vendetta being waged by political enemies spearheaded by Mr. Ayade. She also alleged that the latter wants her dead.

“If anything happens to me, Governor Ayade should be held responsible for the text he sent to me. I would like the public to know that Governor Ben Ayade, a man whose election I supported, has been sending menacing text messages to me, warning me of the consequences of involving the Nigerian Media and Nigeria Police in the uncovering of the diversion of the relief materials by his government officials,”.

“As we speak, Cross River State is very unsafe, with assassinations and kidnapping becoming the order of the day. Under this cloud of general insecurity nothing must happen to me. Governor Ayade and his gang of merry men should be told that they will be held responsible should I come to any misfortune. This self-serving campaign of calumny against me instigated by the state government is capable inciting ethnic tensions which may in turn lead to the shedding of blood, a prospect I dread greatly.”

She also threatened to relocate all her investments in Cross River, notably her restaurant, Fusion, to Lagos State since, according to her, it appears that she is no longer wanted in her homestead.

Ms. Ita-Giwa, also known as Mama Bakassi, said trouble began after she blew the whistle on the alleged diversion of the relief materials she sourced from the National Refugee Commission for victims of a fire outbreak in Dayspring Island, Bakassi.

She noted, “From my observations, it appears to me that Governor Ayade feels threatened by my joining the APC for whatever reason. I don’t recall any other former PDP stalwart in the state who decamped to the APC being as persecuted as I am. Could it be that Governor Ayade is picking on me because of my gender or my enormous electoral appeal? I choose to believe the latter as I would like to believe that Ayade is not a misogynist, and he ought to know that I have never played gender politics.”

She said rather than get praises for her timely intervention, she got knocks.

“They turned the table around and accused me of diverting the relief materials,” she said.

Not only that, some disgruntled people of Bakassi, she alleged, have asked her to cease from representing Bakassi. This, she said, has necessitated her decision to relocate all her investments from Cross Rivers State.

“I have no problem abandoning Bakassi which is my father’s town for Calabar South where my mother hails from. I contested and represented Calabar South in the House of Representative. I can also transfer my love and passion to Ilaro in Ogun state where my step-father hails from since I have a cordial relationship with them."

Donald Trump Became First President In Two Decades Not To Host A Ramadan Dinner

Donald Trump has broken with a two-decade old tradition of hosting an iftar meal at the White House during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.T
he modern tradition was started by First Lady Hillary Clinton, who hosted a meal on Eid al-Fitr, which marks the end of Ramadan, in 1996.
Both Presidents George Bush and Barack Obama hosted an annual iftar – the sunset meal that breaks the daily fast during the holy month – in their time in office.
The first, informal, White House iftar is said to have taken place in 1805, when Thomas Jefferson hosted the Tunisian envoy to the US and announced in invitations that “dinner will be on the table precisely at sun-set”.
Secretary of State Rex Tillerson reportedly rejected a request by his department’s office of religion and global affairs to hold an event for the holiday.
“It is disappointing because that’s been a good tradition,” Imam Talib Shareef of the Nation’s Mosque in Washington, DC, told the magazine Newsweek of Mr Trump’s decision.
“To stop it doesn’t send a good message. You get the chance to go golfing and all this other kind of stuff. How come you don’t have time for a population of your society that needs some assistance? The message that it sends is that we’re not that important.”
The president released a short statement over the weekend, sending “warm greetings” to Muslims celebrating the end of Ramadan.

Reasons why Governor Wike dissolves his cabinet

Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers says the dissolution of the State Executive Council is to ensure better performance of the machinery of government and move the state forward.
The governor stated this on Sunday at a Thanksgiving service over the victory of Evans Bipi, the Majority Whip of the State House of Assembly in the rerun election for Ogu/Bolu state constituency in the House of Assembly.
Mr. Wike noted that the dissolution was carried out at the right time after due consultation with the leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state.
“The dissolution was done to enable the machinery of government to move the state forward; this is when you know those who are loyal and those who are not loyal.
“There is no crack in government; we are working together. The dissolution was done in consultation with the leadership of PDP in the state,” Mr. Wike said
According to him, his administration will work with those who are loyal while those who are not loyal will be dropped.
“Those who are not loyal will be shown the way out, those who are loyal will come back. When you are going into another dispensation, you have to put things in order,” Mr. Wike said.
The governor, who also assured that his administration would continue to deliver on its electoral promises to the people, commended Mr. Bipi for his unwavering loyalty at all times.

“When people never gave us hope, Evans Bipi was reliable; Bipi is a very loyal and committed person,” he said.
The governor said that Mr. Bipi was among the first group of supporters that the party had in the state.
Mr. Wike lauded the people of Ogu/Bolo council for supporting Mr. Bipi all through the re-run elections in the area.
The governor urged contractors handling rehabilitation of schools in Ogu/Bolo council to ensure early completion.
Mr. Bipi, in his remarks, reiterated the resolve of the people of Ogu/Bolo to support the Wike-led government.
The former First lady of Nigeria, Patience Jonathan, former members of the Rivers Executive Council, religious leaders and Caretaker Committee Chairmen graced the occasion.

Amaechi's wife didn't demand or collect money from us- Former LGA chairmen and commissioners in Rivers state refute Wike's claim

Earlier in the week, Rivers state governor, Nyesom Wike alleged that each commissioner and local government chairman in Rivers State paid Amaechi's wife, Judith, the sum of N3m and N2m monthly while he was in office.

Amaechi has already come out to deny this claim. Now, the former chairmen and commissioners in the state during Amaechi's tenure have released a joint statement denying Wike's claim...

The statement was signed by the former chairman of Asari-Toru LGA, Ojukaye Flag Amachree and the former Commissioner of Sports, Fred Mbombo-Igwe.

Read the statement below...

The attention of former Chairmen of Local Government Councils and Commissioners in Rivers State during the administration of former Governor Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi have been drawn to a recent media interview granted by current governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike, where Wike falsely accused Dame Judith Amaechi, the wife of our boss of extorting and collecting monthly, between Two and Three Million Naira from Commissioners and Local Government Council chairmen respectively, while her husband was the State governor.

Realizing the magnitude and gravity of this allegation, the Council Chairmen and Commissioners deem it necessary to make this public clarification in the interest of our teeming supporters and Rivers people.

1. Nyesom Wike since his assumption to office appears to have a major agendum, which is to tarnish the sterling reputation of former Governor Amaechi, his erstwhile benefactor. He is bereft of ideas and unprepared for the task of governing a heterogeneous state like Rivers.
2. Wike, while serving as the Chief of Staff to Governor Amaechi interfaced regularly with Council Chairmen. With this rare privilege and his avarice plus his corrupt tendencies, he elected to commit a lot of fraudulent and sharp practices including massive looting and various degree of financial extortion on the council chairmen and commissioners who felt hapless due to his perceived closeness to the governor as the chief of staff.
3. On several occasions, Wike hiding under the subterfuge of his office as intermediary between the then governor and other elected or appointed public officials made financial demands and extorted money from council chairmen including arm twisting them to award contracts to him.
4. It is on record that several LGA projects then, including the new secretariat of Port Harcourt City Council and Etche Council, were done by Wike. Council chairmen and State officials were forced
to contribute several millions of naira to Wike under the pretext of fighting his legal battle with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) when he was arrested and tried for corruption. For the most flimsy excuses Wike placed hefty levies on council chairmen. Failure to pay are usually met with stiff sanctions
5. Governor Wike is indeed morally bankrupt and cannot point accusing fingers at the wife of former governor Amaechi. In fact the then chief of staff to Amaechi gave stern directives to council chairmen never to support the activities of the wife of the governor.
6. We want to state that no Council Chairman either individually or as a group of chairmen or State Commissioners were told, coerced, intimidated or persuaded to pay any money to the wife of the former Governor. And no money was given to her
7. Gov. Wike lacks moral rectitude. He is bereft of ideas and has no respect for his wife, hence this shameful attempt to drag the name and reputation of the wife of his former boss into disrepute.
8. Governor Wike is too economical with the truth and is in fact a pathological liar who should be ignored. His allegation is baseless, untrue and a figment of his warped imagination.
9. Former Council Chairmen and Commissioners who served under the administration of Rt. Hon.

Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi by this statement therefore warn Governor Wike against this disgraceful and disgusting mischief against the wife of Amaechi and urge him to tender an unreserved apology to the wife of the former governor immediately or be ready to face the consequences of his stupidity.

A total of 379 Nigerians were arrested in Malaysia from 2015 till June this year for drug-related offences.

A total of 379 Nigerians were arrested in Malaysia from 2015 till June this year for drug-related offences.
Federal narcotics crime investigation department director Commissioner Datuk Seri Mokhtar Mohd Shariff told reporters in a media conference at Bukit Aman police headquarters on Monday, June 19.

Meanwhile, eight Nigerians, aged 25 to 39 years and a Ugandan, 25, were nabbed on Friday, June 17, for distributing drugs worth RM100,000 in Wangsa Maju. Five of the Nigerian suspects were university students.
"Out of this total, 122 were students at local institutions of higher learning," Mokhtar told reporters while displaying the seized drugs." said Shariff.
A total of 142 suspects have been charged under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which provides the mandatory death sentence upon conviction.
Mokhtar advised all colleges and universities to alert the police if there is any indication of possible students' involvement with drugs.
"Ensure the students come and study, and not to peddle drugs," he said.
Mokhtar was referring to the latest incident where police seized 1kg of syabu packed within cake boxes during an operation at four locations in the city on Friday.
It was a joint operation by Bukit Aman Narcotics Crime Investigation Department (NCID) and the Special Tactical Intelligence Narcotics Group (Sting).
"Five of the suspects were students, three studying multimedia and two majoring in language courses.
"Four other suspects had no documents on them, when police made the arrests during raids in Taman Danau, Setapak and along Jalan Pahang," he said.

Kidnapper Evans Faces Death Penalty, Life Imprisonment As Ambode Signs Bill

The Lagos state Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode has signed into law, the state kidnapping prohibition bill, 2016 which prescribes Life Imprisonment or death penalty for the offence of Kidnapping and forceful extortion in Lagos State, meaning that the recently arrested kidnap kingpin, Chukwudubem Onwuamadike, a.k.a. Evans may get a life imprisonment or death penalty sentence.

The law provides for death penalty for kidnappers whose victims die in their custody, and life imprisonment for the act of kidnapping.

He said that kidnapping had become a major threat to the safety of residents and, therefore, required decisive action by the government.

“This law imposes a penalty of life imprisonment for kidnapping for ransom. “The law stipulates that, where a victim dies in the course of kidnapping, the suspect is liable on conviction to death. “Security is of utmost importance to our administration, and we are confident that this law will serve as a deterrent to anybody who may desire to engage in this wicked act within the boundaries of Lagos State. “Our justice system will be required to execute this law in absolute and make sure that any criminal caught faces the full wrath of the law,” he said.

Recall that Evans himself had advised kidnappers or intending ones to desist from the act, saying it does not pay any longer. He had said that if he can be caught, then nobody can escape the police being that the force has improved greatly in her anti-crime fight.

Evans, a  billionaire kidnap kingpin had successfully  coordinated and masterminded several high profile kidnappings and armed robberies within Lagos, Anambra and Enugu States. According to him, “My advise to them is that as they are watching me standing here with policemen, they should stop everything about that, it doesn’t pay.” He gave the advise to other kidnappers while leading police operatives to two houses in Ejigbo and Igando areas of Lagos state where he keeps his victims until huge ransoms are paid. According to him, he keeps most of his victims in the two houses for months. He said he even pays up to seven hundred thousand Naira, (700,000) yearly for a three bedroom flat çells’ where the victims are kept. Upon departure from Igando area Evans had opined, “The Nigeria Police is not what it is used to be. They are far more advanced than they were. If they could arrest me, there is no criminal they can’t arrest.”

Photos: Two bribe-seeking traffic wardens dismissed from Nigeria Police

Two Traffic Wardens F/No. 394120 GDI Musa Muktari and F/No. 10627 GDII Shuaibu Suleman attached to Wuse Police Division, FCT Abuja Command have been dismissed from service with immediate effect for corrupt practice.

This followed an Orderly Room trial at the Provost Department, Force Headquarters Abuja in which both wardens were found guilty of abuse of office, soliciting and receiving a bribe contrary to Paragraph C sub (IV), (VI) and (II) of the 1st Schedule of the Police Act and Regulation CAP 370 of 1990.

A statement issued by Abayomi Shogunle, the Assistant Commissioner of Police, Public Complaint Rapid Response Unit (PCRRU),
on 30th May, 2017 a motorist Mr. AG (real name withheld) came to the Public Complaint Rapid Response Unit (PCRRU) FHQ Abuja and reported that while driving his vehicle on 29th May, 2017 (12:30pm) along Wuse market road he was accosted by two Traffic Wardens who accused him of “beating traffic light” despite the fact that he did not.
The wardens started demanding for bribe before they will allow him go and they led him to an Automated Teller Machine (ATM) not far from the scene where he was forced to make a withdrawal of Fifteen Thousand Naira (N15,000) from his account which he gave to the traffic wardens. He also stated that that one of the wardens forgot his mobile phone in his car.
PCRRU immediately launched an investigation (Tracking Number #PCRRU475669), both traffic wardens where identified and apprehended. The sum of N15,000 earlier extorted from the complainant was recovered from both wardens (N7,500 each as money was already shared).
Both wardens were subsequently defaulted and referred to the Force Provost Marshal FHQ Abuja for Orderly Room trial during which all witnesses were called, exhibits were presented and defaulters (both wardens) heard.
The Adjudicating officer found both defaulters guilty as charged and recommended punishment of dismissal from service. The orderly room proceeding has been reviewed by the appropriate NPF authority and the punishment approved with immediate effect. Traffic warden uniforms, ID cards and all police accoutrements issued to the men have been retrieved and all other dismissal procedure completed.
The complainant has also been handed back his N15,000 [photo attached] with an apology from the PCRRU. The visibly delighted man while collecting his money said:
"I never thought this could happen in this country; the officers punished and my money returned to me. God bless the IG, I will go out and spread the news about PCRRU to everyone".

Meanwhile, the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Ibrahim Idris has commended the complainant for exposing this unprofessional and unacceptable conduct of these traffic wardens.
"We will not allow corrupt practices to continue". IGP stated.
He equally enjoins members of the public to make use of the PCRRU platform which is available 24/7

$115m Diezani Cash: EFCC sets surety free as former Minister of state for FCT, Jumoke Akinjide, turns self in (photos)

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission today withdrew the detention order against Honourable Aliyu Ahman Pategi who stood surety for Ms Jumoke Akinjide, a former Minister of State, Ministry of Federal Capital Territory under President Jonathan, after she turned herself in at the Ikoyi office of the Commission in Lagos.

Aliyu, a Federal lawmaker representing Edu/Moro/Patigi Federal Constituency of Kwara State was on Friday remanded in EFCC custody by a Lagos State Magistrate Court, Igbosere for failing to produce the suspect when needed by investigators and her failure to appear before a Federal High Court sitting in Ibadan for three proceedings.

Jumoke, who has been evading arraignment in the Federal High Court Ibadan, presided by Justice Ayo Emmanuel, is facing a 24 count charge of Money Laundering in Suit No.FHC/1B/26C/2017.

The court had threatened to dismiss the matter if the prosecution could not produce her in court at the next adjourned date, 22nd June 2017. This prompted the prosecution to drag the surety before the Lagos State Magistrate Court to show cause why the N650 million bond will not be forfeited to the Federal Government of Nigeria.

Patigi, however regained his freedom as information reached the court through his counsel that Ms Akinjide had presented herself to the EFCC. This was confirmed by EFCC lawyer, Rotimi Oyedepo.

"I have just confirmed from operatives of the EFCC that Oloye Jumoke Akinjide has turned herself in at the Ikoyi Office. Since it was inability of the 2nd respondent to produce her that triggered our application, we would therefore in the interest of justice, apply that the suit be struck out in view of success of 2nd respondent to secure the appearance of 1st respondent", Oyedepo said.

Upon submissions of both parties, presiding Chief Magistrate Afolashade Botoku struck out the EFCC application. Jumoke Akinjide, alongside Oyo State PDP Chairman Yinka Taiwo are being accused by EFCC of fraudulently receiving the sum of N650 million from former Petroleum Minister Diezani Alison-Madueke out of the $115 million doled out by the former minister, allegedly to influence the outcome of the 2015 presidential election.

The said sum was alleged to be gratification received by Mrs. Alison-Madueke from various oil marketers such as Northern Belt Oil and Gas Company, Actus Integrated Investment Limited, Midwestern Oil and Gas Company Limited and Adesanya Leno Olaitab. Based on evidence of her alleged involvement in the crime, Ms. Akinjide was invited to the EFCC office in Lagos on 9 August, 2016 and wrote a statement after which Mr. Pategi entered a bail bond of N650million to be forfeited should Ms. Akinjide jumps administrative bail.

The suspect who however presented herself to the Commission today after months of hide and seek, is currently cooling her heels in EFCC custody and would be arraigned on Thursday June 22nd.

Federal Government has debunked the report of removing CRK from school curriculum

The Federal Ministry of Education has denied repo
rts that Christian Religious Knowledge, CRK, has been removed as a subject of study from the curriculum of public secondary schools in Nigeria while Islamic Religious Studies, IRS, has been reintroduced.

Director of Press, Federal Ministry of Education, Mrs. Chinenye Ihuoma, who denied the report, said the Ministry had only designed a new subject which merged Civic Education, IRS, CRK and Social Studies into “Religion and National Values.”

“The alternation is not from the minister, this is purely from the National Council on Education. It is just as the council has said that History should be a subject of its own at the basic level in the first nine years. Now, a new subject has been introduced, called Religion and National Values. It is a fusion of religion and civics. I have not seen the details but in a case where you have subject combinations in the same period, everyone will attend lectures that correspond with their own religion. Arabic and Islamic Studies are not standing alone. Islamic Religious Study and Christian Religious Study as well as national values will be taught under a new subject.”she said

Appeal court ban EFCC from freezing Ayo Fayose’s Zenith Bank Accounts

An Appeal Court sitting in Ado Ekiti, the Ekiti State capital today dismissed an interlocutory application brought before it by the EFCC against Governor Ayodele Fayose.

EFCC, in the application, sought to restrain the Zenith Bank Plc from allowing the governor to gain access to his accounts domiciled in the bank.
However, the Appeal Court panel comprising Justices Ahmed Belgore, Fatima Akinbami and Paul Elechi, in a unanimous verdict dismissed the application.
Reading the judgment, Justice Akinbami said, “No valid appeal has been made against the judgement of the lower court which unfroze the account. Again, the judgment the EFCC was appealing against was not attached to this application. EFCC also failed to show sufficient evidence that the money in the account was a proceed of crime as claimed. In doing this, we expect the EFCC to have shown evidence that the plaintiff has been tried for a criminal offence before for it to assume that he can receive the proceed of crime.
“We also found that there was suppression of facts to get the account frozen in the first instance. It was also noted that Governor Fayose, in line with Section 308, enjoys immunity and his personal account can’t be frozen.  Having not done all these as demanded by law and equity, as those facts were facts that would assist in exercising the court’s discretion either for or against as it is an application that is predicated on the discretion of the court, the application is hereby thrown out.”
The accounts were frozen back in June 2016 over allegations that they contained funds suspected to have been distributed through the office of the former National Security Adviser, Colonel Sambo Dasuki.
However, Justice Taiwo Taiwo of the Federal High Court, Ado Ekiti, unfroze the accounts in December 2016, after which the governor withdrew N5million from the accounts.  Consequent upon this, the EFCC filed an appeal against the judgement and prayed the court to freeze the accounts on the premise that the funds in the accounts were the proceeds of crime and pending the dispensation of justice on the matter to prove Fayose’s innocence.
Reacting to the judgment, Fayose’s lawyer, Mike Ozekhome (SAN) “Governor Fayose and myself have again been vindicated that EFCC’s operations have not been based on law but on emotion”.

SEE THE REASON WHY AN EDO WOMAN BECAME MAD ON THE STREET

A woman identified as Mrs. Suzzan Idogei from Esan central in Edo - has been allegedly struck with madness after being hit with partial stroke from an occult group in the region for failing to provide her only surviving son for initiation. According to the woman's son, Felix Idogei who reached out to National Helm, he had to run away from Nigeria to Europe because of threat to his own life.

In an exclusive chat with National Helm, Felix revealed that his late father was a member of a very powerful occult group in Edo and even after his death years ago - the power of the group still had powerful effect in his family. He disclosed that members of the occult group kept pestering his mother to bring her first son (Fedelis Idogei) for initiation in order to replace his father in the group but she refused.

According to Felix, his elder brother also refused to join the group because he was a christian. The cult group allegedly killed him due to his refusal as he died in a mysterious circumstance. After the death of his elder brother, it was now his turn to be initiated. The cult group kept disturbing his mother both spiritually and also physically to bring the only surviving son (Felix) to join them. She reported the case to the police about the physical threat to her life (see affidavit below) but the police could do nothing about it.

Felix revealed that he had to flee Nigeria when the threat became too much...Thinking that his escape would help kill the matter, the cult group struck his mother with partial stroke, she couldn't use one of her hands. The mother was taken to Lagos from the village to stay with her brother but that move was also in vain as the cult group still reached out to her and finally struck her with madness.

The young man (Felix) disclosed that his mother is now insane and is nowhere to be found. The video footage which he provided of her - was taken before she went missing..

He said he's sharing this story to the public because 'I want people to learn from my late father ways so they won't think of joining any cult', in his words.

ANOTHER NIGERIAN ARRESTED IN ITALY OVER HUMAN TRAFFICKING

A Nigerian human trafficker known as “ Rambo ” has been arrested in Italy on charges of torturing and killing migrants held captive in Libya , Italian police said Tuesday .

The suspect named John Ogais , 25 , was traced to a reception centre in Calabria in southern Italy and clapped in cuffs on charges of belonging to a transnational smuggling ring , specialising in human trafficking, murder and rape .

Detectives in Agrigento in Sicily have pulled together witness testimony from migrants who accuse Ogais of torturing people held captive in a makeshift prison , with at least two men reportedly dying at his hands .

Many of those rescued from flimsy dinghies in the Mediterranean as they try to make the perilous trip to Europe bear torture scars and tell rescuers they had no choice but to flee for their lives from the crisis - hit African country .

While I was inside that ghetto , where it was impossible to escape, I heard that a man who called himself Rambo had killed a migrant , ” one of the witnesses said according to the police statement.

“ My cousin and others tried to escape but they were caught and tortured nearly to death , ” the witness said .
Another said : “ Once I saw Rambo the Nigerian kill a migrant he had gagged and tortured for a long time ” , while yet another said he “ personally saw two people beaten to death , an underage boy and a man killed by Rambo ” .

– Extortion, murder –

The latter was “ killed by Rambo in front of the victim ’ s brother . When he killed the man Rambo pointed a gun at the brother and told him not to tell his family anything and to get them to immediately send money ” for their release .

Ogais was found staying at a reception centre in Isola di Capo Rizzuto , one of the largest such centres in Italy , and the scene of mass arrests last month over a mafia scandal which capitalised on asylum seekers .
Libya has long been a stepping stone for migrants seeking a better life in Europe and people smugglers have stepped up their lucrative business in the chaos which has engulfed the country since its 2011 revolution .
People rescued at sea have described harrowing ransom situations in which captors lock up migrants and demand their families send money to buy their freedom . Those who fail to comply are executed .
Reports have also emerged of ruthless traffickers burying people alive on the beaches of Libya if they refuse to board unseaworthy dinghies and overcrowded boats.

Despite the dangers, many of those arriving in Libya — fleeing conflict or poverty — find it almost impossible to get out again, if not by sea .
According to the UN ’ s International Organization for Migration , there are between 700 , 000 and one million people in Libya awaiting their chance to cross.
Over 77 , 000 people have tried to cross the Mediterranean to Europe since the beginning of the year , the UN ’ s refugee agency said Tuesday , while close to 2 , 000 people have died trying .
